I made it with 3 Pokemon too: Charmelion, Nidoking, Persian.
When I got to the 3rd Gym, they where level 25 each. They also know many great TM's.

@Zach: Yeah, i BEAT victory road. And the Pokemon League which includes my rival.

Also, you do know that you go to the Kanto region, and have to get another set of 8 badges right? (If you have HG/SS)

If anyone cares, the Sunny Day / Solar Beam combo is a beast. Solar beam takes a turn to charge, but if the sun is shining, it won't have to.

Well, I haven't been playing as religiously as you clearly...but only a fool shows their opponent all their cards. I will tell you this though...I'm now just finished with the 5th gym and have only 4 pokemon all in the low 30's.

Quilava, Haunter, Pidgeotto and Lapras.

I'm currently looking for an electric type and considering a dragon type.

Also, everyone knows the sunny day / solar beam combo. Thats a combo for beginners.
