How to change your default.xbe image for Halo 2

Post by JacksonCougar »
How to change your default.xbe image for Halo 2
The default.xbe image is used by many dashboards to create a thumnbail image next to games and applications in the menus.
I know of no tool that is designed to do this in one easy step but with a little bit of effort you can do it using existing tools.

Image
 • Stage One: Preparation
Step One: Acquire the Default.xbe from your Halo 2 disk/folder.
Step Two: Download Fast_xbx2dds2img from xbox-scene.
Step Three: Download deXBE from xbox-scene.
Step Four: Acquire bundler. [utorrent]
Step Five: Acquire a Hex editor – needs to be able to replace hex, I used Hex Workshop.
 • Stage Two: Extract Image Data
Step One: Run deXBE and open your default.xbe in it.
Step Two: Scroll down until you find “$$XTIMAGE” in the sections window.
Step Three: Right click the item and select Extract from the list: save it.
Step Four: Close deXBE. We are finished using it.
 • Stage Three: Convert Image Data
Step One: Open the folder you extracted Fast_xbx2dds2img to.
Step Two: Move the “$$XTIMAGE” file into the “xbx” folder.
Step Three: Run Fast_xbx2dds2img and select the “$$XTIMAGE” file from the left window.
Step Four: Select xbx => img for the conversion type.
Step Five: Choose a Target Format.
Step Six: Press Convert. Ignore the warning :: Wait for it to output “Conversion finished”.
 • Stage Four: Edit Image
Step One: Open the extracted image in your favorite image editing software (you will find it in the “img” folder within the Fast_xbx2dds2img directory).
Step Two: Save the image as “$$XTIMAGE_COPY” as a “.bmp” inside of the “img” directory.
 • Stage Five: Revert Image Data
Step One: Run Fast_xbx2dds2img.
Step Two: Select img => xbx for the conversion type.
Step Three: Select the file “$$XTIMAGE_COPY”
Step Four: Hit Convert. Ignore the warning :: Wait for it to output “Injection finished”.
Step Six: Close Fast_xbx2dds2img. We are finished using it.
 • Stage Six: Overwrite Image Data
Step One: Run Hex Workshop and open default.xbe, $$XTIMAGE, and $$XTIMAGE_COPY in it.
Step Two: Select the $$XTIMAGE tab.
Step Three: Select the first row of hex values at the beginning of the file:
Step Four: Select the default.xbe tab.
Step Five: Find (ctrl+f) the hex values you just copied.
Step Six: Select all the hex values that represent the “$$XTIMAGE” (compare with the $$XTIMAGE tab to get this right).
Step Seven: Select the $$XTIMAGE_COPY tab.
Step Eight: Select all hex value and copy to clipboard.
Step Nine: Select default.xbe tab.
Step Ten: Paste the hex values you just copied over the selection in the default.xbe file you made earlier.
Step Eleven: Save default.xbe and replace your halo 2 default.xbe file with your edited one.
 • Stage Seven: FAQ
Q) Fast_xbx2dds2img does not open!
A) Run (super+r) this: regsvr32 -u kixforms.dll
then this: regsvr32 kixforms.dll

Q) I overwrote the old default.xbe with the new one but the thumbnail is the same?
A) Clear your thumbnail cache. It changes depending on dashboard but using xbmc the cache is located in your userdata

We will find out in 2 hours.

"Torrent not available. For newly uploaded torrents, it can take up to 2 hours before publicly viewable."

I still get an invalid ID, how large is the file anyway? If its less then 100mb then upload it to rapidshare or megaupload. Or you can send it to me on aim or xfire and I can create the torrent.
