High Resolution Bitmaps

I have created some high resolution bitmaps for Halo 2. These bitmaps can be used to add higher detail textures to custom models, as well as high detail map skins.
The bitmaps come in formats of DXT 1, DXT 2/3, and DXT 4/5 in both 1024x1024 and 2048x2048.

This is a list of the formats and how much file size they will add to your map labeled in blue.

Bitmaps: 1024x1024
  • DXT 1: 0.5Mb
  • DXT 2/3: 1.0Mb
  • DXT 4/5: 1.0Mb
Bitmaps: 2048x2048
  • DXT 1: 2.0Mb
  • DXT 2/3: 4.0Mb
  • DXT 4/5: 4.0Mb
Just save them from this map I have supplied and build them into your map.
And if you need extras of the same format, you can just duplicate them...

Note: The 1024x1024 are best suited for gameplay. The 2048s are more of a proof of concept.

How were you able to make larger bitmaps?

Funny thing is is that one of the steps involves actually corrupting the bitmap.

The new bitmaps don't have to be your standard 1/1 ratio like these. You could have any size.

Yea, sorry. ARGB8's are just too finicky to deal with. It took forever to get them working at all and DotHalo would tend to kills maps even though it only has one submap...

If it's a HUD bitmap you need, just use a DXT 4/5. You will get the same identical quality when using them as a HUD bitmap as if you where using an ARGB8.

Make a black/white gradient in photoshop and save it as a DXT 5 then save it as another bitmap as a A8R8G8B8. Close photoshop and then open the two bitmaps, the A8R8G8B8 will look almost perfect but the dxt 5 will look lightly corrupted closer up and it will have a greenish tint in some spots. I think this may be photoshop's fault but I'm not sure.
I have never seen photoshop corrupt a bitmap in that way. :hmm: ~DS

EDIT: Its not photoshop that does this but the texture tool included with directx SDK also causes slight corrupted bitmaps which is why custom shield meters have that teeth effect.
