I believe that in earlier versions of windows it did have to be 3 or less letters(I think maybe 95 or before), but eventually they allowed for longer extensions. That's why it used to be .htm for html web pages.

I personally thought it was like one of those integrated executable files...

None of my new models did that.....maybe something wrong with the new PMI? iPMI worked fine in that sort
